A car accident can be an emotionally and physically difficult event. The dynamics of a car crash often make it difficult to think clearly or strategically. One vital element of the post-crash scene includes calling for the assistance of a tow truck. Here's what to know now to better prepare you for a tow in the event of a car crash.

DETERMINE WHETHER YOU NEED A TOW TRUCK

Chances are your car is not drivable after a medium to large car crash. Damage to areas of the car that impede the motion of your tires prohibits a safe drive. Extensive damage that impacts the mechanics of your car won't allow an engine to start and move.

Your car may still run even with little visible damage, but this does not mean you should drive it. Broken headlights, blinkers, and other safety lights mean your car is not very visible and should stay put. A cracked or broken windshield or missing mirrors are a danger to your ability to safely see.

You also should not drive when other safety features on your car are compromised, such as a dangling bumper or missing windshield wipers.
If your car is safe to drive, then you probably won't need a tow truck. However, let this accident be a lesson to double check that you have a few names and phone numbers of reputable towing companies on hand for future reference.

STICK TO YOUR TOWING COMPANY OF CHOICE

If your vehicle is not drivable, it's time to make the phone call to request a tow truck. You can ask the police for a list of available tow services in the area, or ask your insurance company for a referral. Sometimes referrals simplify the process of billing or reimbursement, but this does not mean the company is right for you.

You already keep your driver's license, vehicle registration, and proof of auto insurance handy in your glove compartment. Make it a practice to keep the name and phone number of a reputable towing company handy as well. Take the time to read reviews, if any, to help you in your choice.

DECIDE WHERE TO TOW YOUR DAMAGED CAR

The variety of destination options makes the decision of where to tow your damaged car confusing. Unless you're emotionally or physically unable to inform the tow truck driver, you do have a say in where the car ends up. Unless you specify, the driver will probably take the car to their tow yard.

Otherwise, it's best to have the driver tow your car to your shop of choice. Even if the car appears totaled, still insist on a mechanic or body shop over salvage yard. This way, the insurance adjustor can make the decision to move it to salvage if the car is indeed totaled. Restorative work or repairs can begin sooner when the car is already at the shop.

KNOW WHAT TO DO WHEN THE TOW TRUCK ARRIVES

Before the tow truck arrives at the scene of the accident, you have some preparation to do. First, take pictures of all the damage to the car to give you a record of evidence. Include the interior of the vehicle to show the presence and condition of items like an upgraded stereo, expensive floor mats, or steering wheel cover.

Next, remove everything personal and of value you can't afford to lose in case of theft. You don't know how long the car may sit at the shop, or the vehicle locks may not work properly. Empty the glove box entirely, and check the trunk as well as other storage spaces.
